I think there is room for both cloud and virtualization to live side by side.
Each company has to assess which offering to run with?

A virtualization solution can be costly to begin with but it may help the CEO's of the world to sleep easily with a 99.9% uptime offering from Vmware for instance.

Can companies put up with 'denial of service' outages as was witnessed yesterday with Twitter?

Kevin,

Is it possible that Cloud offerings will render Virtualization as expounded above 'redundant' ? For example what Amazon and others are offering ? Is it not more compelling from a business and ROI viewpoint?

Each company should use the ROI calculator to assess the true savings with virtualization.

Gartner has said "Virtualization will be the highest-impact trend changing infrastructure and operations through 2012"

ROI on Desktop virtualization not proven yet.

Seems 'techie bits' still 2 complicated and also hard 2 compare when most IT shops don't know how much it *really costs* to provision a desktop
